The Public Market – The Harden, So What’s The Difference?

Let’s start with a bit of history. In its heyday, The Public Market was a vibrant hub, serving as both a bustling farmer’s market and a gathering place for retailers and vendors. Over the years, it hosted various businesses before sitting vacant for nearly two decades—its potential waiting to be rediscovered.

Then Wilks Development stepped in with a bold vision: to transform The Public Market into a cultural hotspot for the community.

“So then why do I keep hearing about Senior Living?”  Stay with us.

The Public Market: A Space for Everyone

As shown in the images above, The Public Market will once again be open to the public. This historic building will house a restaurant, a café, and a lively venue for libations—all accessible to everyone. Situated in an ideal location, with proximity to cultural, recreational, and medical facilities, the businesses here are poised for success.

The building’s architectural charm and storied past make it a perfect attraction for tourists and locals alike, offering them a chance to engage with Fort Worth’s history in a fresh and meaningful way. Our goal is to restore this space to its former glory—a place for the community to come together, just as it was in its prime.

 So, What About the Harden?

Now, you might be asking, "What’s The Harden, and where does it fit into all of this?" We're glad you asked!

The Harden is a newly developed structure located behind the original Public Market building. We're adding 199 modern apartments, creating an active senior living community for residents aged 62 and over. These residents will enjoy exclusive access to top-tier amenities, some of which will occupy the rear of The Public Market—accessible only to The Harden’s tenants.

But don’t worry; the layout will make perfect sense once the project is complete. Our talented team is working diligently to ensure the design honors the integrity of the space while offering a seamless experience for both Public Market visitors and Harden residents.

Why Active Senior Living?

All too often, retirement communities are built far from city centers, isolating seniors in sterile environments with little to do and limited interaction with family and friends. This separation can take away the joy of life’s simple pleasures.

The Harden is Fort Worth’s answer to that problem. It offers a premier living experience for active seniors, allowing them to live at the heart of Fort Worth's historic Public Market. This project not only aligns with Wilks Development’s core values but also reinforces our dedication to preserving Fort Worth’s rich heritage.

“While we know people of all ages appreciate its rich heritage, I do believe seniors, in particular, will find great pride in residing at a location that holds such deep meaning to Fort Worth,” said Jess Green, Senior VP at Wilks Development.

 A Community Reimagined

The Public Market remains a symbol of hope and renewal for Fort Worth. As our city continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the importance of preservation and the legacy of those who shaped its past.

These buildings, old and new, will once again serve as a gathering place for the people of Fort Worth, offering a destination for all ages.
